K-Gr. 2. Most rebus stories substitute pictures for nouns. Marzollo takes the process a step further, ending with a story that has no multiletter words at all. Each multiletter word is represented by a letter (B for be, C for see, U for you) or a picture. A child must be old enough to recognize numbers and letters to read the whole story, though kids just learning to read may enjoy identifying the pictures and hearing adults or older siblings struggle with letters for a change. The letters and symbols make up a dialogue among children preparing for a Christmas pageant. The text appears on the left-hand pages; on the facing pages, the bright line-and-wash illustrations show cheerful children before and during the show. A bit of fun for those who enjoy word games.
