A bullied boy is lured by the dark power of revenge in this haunting fantasy by the author of COLD TOM.
Stevie, 13, has started at a new school and is desperate for acceptance. Like any teenager, he is self-conscious and embarrassed by his family. But he also hates himself for being cruelly bullied at his old school, and he will do anything to be accepted by bullies here rather than be their victim. Then he finds an odd fossil called a Devil's Toenail, which fills him with an almost evil sense of daring. The Devil's Toenail's tauntings and urgings to take revenge on the world are relentless, but in the end, Stevie discovers that believing in himself is what brings true power and happiness.

Major new children's book author - 'Cold Tom' described as 'the finest first novel...since David Almond's 'Skellig'' by Anne Johnstone in the Glasgow Herald.
When 13-year-old Stevie Saunders finds a rock called a devil's toenail on the beach, he finds he's suddenly filled with an evil power that gives him the ability to be just mean enough to fit in with the cool gang at school. While Robert Glenister is a bit too old to be credible as the young Stevie, he does read this first-person account of life at a tough age with enough dry humor, tenderness, and angst to reflect a trouble-making yet lovable kid. An equally entertaining addition to the narration is the vocal enhancement that represents the devil's toenail speaking to Stevie. It's just creepy and unnerving enough to build the suspense in this charming story. H.L.S. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
