Gr. 1, younger for reading aloud. Although evidently designed with the bookstore market in mind, given the inclusion of detachable board-pages that pull apart into vocabulary flashcards, this colorful beginning reader has library potential as well. Any young child who loves carnival rides will be drawn to the book with its simple, rhyming vocabulary ("A water slide! My favorite ride!") and mild story of a boy and his mother who enjoy the rides, lose sight of each other for a moment, then find one another again. Rounding out the book is a children's magazine^-like feature, a few pages of games such as rebus words, opposites, and "what's wrong with this picture," all related to the book and reinforcing the vocabulary.
