Grade 6-10 Cal Cameron has everything: looks, brains, popularity, and prowess on the football field. So what's bother ing him? For one thing, his father pays more attention to Cal's older brother Eugene, and Cal feels left out and hurt. On the other hand, Granddad never misses Cal's games and practices, which puts a lot of pressure on Cal. He also finds that he's not enjoying his usu al interestshis friends seem shallow and insensitive and he doesn't have the heart for football anymore. What does attract him is Marti, a new girl who wears all the wrong clothes and is obliv ious to peer pressure. It is through Marti that he learns about humanity and compassion, both of which help him to reassess and understand his own personal values and goals. This is a to tally absorbing novel, with flesh and blood characters that readers will care about and stay with until the end. Cal is particularly endearing. The conflict be tween Cal's father and grandfather which spills over into Cal and Eugene's relationship is realistic and handled well.
