Review

If you're on a calorie-counting diet or just trying to use good sense when choosing foods, you'll find The Brand-Name Calorie Counter a helpful shopping companion. This book has 444 pages of food items by category and brand name, so you can compare several brands of the same item. You discover, for example, that all banana nut muffins are not the same: Awrey's Grande has 400 calories, while a Tastykake Family has 170. Don't worry about not finding the item or brand you seek--the listings are long and comprehensive. There are 4 pages of frozen pizza, 16 pages of breakfast foods, and 11 pages of ice cream. You'll even find 10 brands of chewing gum!

The food chain/restaurant section is equally helpful. Did you know that Burger King's Croissan'wich with sausage, egg, and cheese has 600 calories, the same as a double cheeseburger? Would you guess that Denny's All-American Slam breakfast has 1,028 calories, and the biscuit with sausage gravy alone has 570? Compare that with the Jack-in-the-Box chicken fajita pita at 290. You can even count the calories of Sizzler salad bar items, from alfalfa sprouts (2 calories for one-quarter cup) to zucchini (5 calories for one-quarter cup). --Joan Price

Eating is America's favorite pastime.  If you stop and think about it, you'll probably realize that a good number of your waking hours are occupied with food.  If you're not actually eating, then you're buying food, planning to buy it, preparing it, even fretting over the prices.  It's almost impossible for any but the most iron-willed soul to escape the national food obsession.  It is, therefore, little wonder that every month an estimated ten million Americans embark on that battle of frustration known as a diet.

As a perennial dieter, I can tell you that there is definite hope that you will lose weight if you stick to your diet.  But that's the problem.  Most people "fall off the wagon" after only two weeks of reducing.  The sameness and boredom of crispy carrot sticks, broiled skinless chicken, and wedges of lettuce get to them, and it's all over very quickly.

The purpose of The Brand-Name Calorie Counter is to help you stay on your diet by relieving the tedium.  For instance, you might want to substitute Tyson's chicken Marsala (180 calories) for the plain broiled chicken, or have a serving of Libby's spaghetti and meatballs (190 calories) for lunch, or reward yourself with a slice of Mrs.  Smith'sBoston creme pie (170 calories).  Dieting is not a pleasant experience, but I do believe the information contained in this book can help make it less painful by introducing variety--which is the spice not only of life but of dieting as well.

Most calorie counters list foods alphabetically.  The Brand-Name Calorie Counter lists foods categorically.  This means that all vegetables are grouped together; so are all frozen dinners, all dips, all nuts, all syrups, and so on.  I can't make diet planning fun, but with this system I've made it as convenient as possible.  If you're wondering what vegetable  to have with your grilled fish, for example, you won't have to hopscotch from A (asparagus) to Z (zucchini)--just turn to chapter 6, "Vegetables and Vegetable Products," and the choices are there at a glance.  Occasionally, you may have trouble deciding what category a food belongs in; to locate such hard-to-categorize foods quickly, just flip to the index.

This sixth edition of The Brand-Name Calorie Counter is completely revised because the food industry is constantly growing and improving to meet the needs of the consumer.  In addition, I have again included fast-food and chain restaurants so that you may take your diet out to dinner.  This section has been expanded, but if you don't find your favorites listed, it may be because the information wasn't available or because the dish varies too much from one franchise location to another.

Over the years, readers have written to tell me how they've used the book.  For some, it's a planning guide for making up menus and marketing lists.  Others have used it to make impossibly rigid diets more flexible and interesting by making substitutions.  Still others have discovered new foods and different brands.  And many people have used it as a "maintenance guide" after they've shed their unwanted pounds.  Eating is very personal, and how you choose to use this book is up to you, but with it you will have the information you need to plan a varied and healthful diet--one that's interesting enough to stick with until you've achieved your goal.

The material contained in The Brand-Name Calorie Counter is based on information from producers, processors, and distributors of brand-name foods, and from food chains.  The data contained herein are the most complete and accurate information available as this book goes to press.  Please bear in mind that seasonal and regional differences can affect the nutritional values of foods.  Also, the food industry often changes recipes and sizes and may discontinue products or add new ones.  In the future I will revise and update this book to keep you informed.

Good luck and good dieting.
