There were still wisps and curls of smoke emanating from the gutted building when Shirley arrived. She watched from across the street as a police officer stood guard in front of the yellow tape surrounding the arson site. He shooed some children and a dog away from the area, and Shirley used the moment to cross the street and hide behind a half-collapsed wall.

From her backpack she removed the two shower caps and slipped them over her oxfords. Then she pulled on a pair of latex gloves and her surgical mask and ducked under the yellow tape, which clearly read CRIME SCENE--DO NOT CROSS.

She was very careful as she picked through the rubble and ash.

"Ah," she murmured as something caught her eye. She bent over and examined it closely. "Burned cloth," she whispered. She picked it up and placed it in a small plastic bag. She waded farther into the debris and came upon a small room that had somehow withstood the fire. There! Against the wall . . . what was that? Shirley frowned and crept over.

A pile of rags not burned, just filthy--and inside, a pair of shabby old sneakers with holes at the toes. The shoes were held together by their laces, tied in a sloppy bow. These were quickly slid into one of Shirley's larger plastic bags.

She checked her watch.

Uh-oh, she thought. But I can still make the second bell if I hurry.

She peeked out from behind a stump of a chimney. The policeman had his back to her; he was still checking the street. Good, Shirley thought, and moved toward the door of the little room. As she turned to duck under the yellow tape, she saw something else. It was stuck to the handle of the door. Gum! Shirley said to herself. A wad of gum! With her Swiss Army knife she scraped it into still another plastic bag.

The policeman suddenly called, "Hey!" and Shirley jumped. But he hadn't seen her. He was trying to roust a homeless man who seemed to be looking for a place to rest.

Shirley began to run down the side street toward the park. It was a shortcut--her school was just at the other end of the woods.
