One of the most universally acclaimed first novels in science fiction--by the man who become one of the most stellar writers in the genre's history. On the orders of Argo, the White Goddess, an itinerant poet and his three companions journey to the island of Aptor. Their to seize a jewel from the dark god Hama and bring it back home. With this precious stone Argo may defeat the malign forces gathered against her and the land of Leptor. But, as the group presses deep into the enigmatic heart of Aptor, easy distinctions between good and evil blur, and somehow the task seems less straightforward. For Argo already owns two of the jewels, and possession of the third would give her unqualified power.
And, as the four friends already know, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

SYNOPSIS: Aldous Huxley has pointed out that while musical prodigies are almost the rule, literary prodigies are comparatively rare. The one area of fiction in which this is not the case is science fiction. Isaac Asimov's first story appeared when he was eighteen, John Brunner's first novel when he was seventeen, Theodore Sturgeon's first story when he was twenty. The roster of young genius in sf is long, and in that context the fact that the author wrote The Jewels of Aptor when he was nineteen, while impressive, is not remarkable - but the style and structure he displays is rare at any age. The book is a rich, mythic quest, a tale of a thief, a poet and a triple goddess. The theme is mutability. It is handled in a symphony of color, with adventures on fog-bound seas, in treacherous jungles, decaying temples, abandoned cities. Over the next two years Delany wrote The Fall of the Towers trilogy, and a year and half later Babel-17, which won a Nebula Award for best novel. Since then he has written such acclaimed masterpieces as Nova, Dhalgren and Triton. The New York Times Book Review has called him ".the most interesting author of science fiction writing in English today." The author has completely revised and expanded this edition from the original. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 000174
