Synopsis

This new (6th) edition of Forfar and Arneil's Textbook of Paediatrics will further strengthen its established position as the standard British text covering the entire specialty of paediatrics. There are some major differences in this edition, reflecting the general changes in style and practice of clinical medicine and recent important and relevant scientific advances. New chapters have been added on "The principles of evidence based paediatrics", "Ambulatory paediatrics", "Adolescent medicine" and "Terminal care and pain management"; despite this, the new edition will be the same length as the current edition. The key information in each chapter will be highlighted in Key Fact boxes for easy review. In addition, the increasing importance of evidence-based practice in paediatrics is reflected in the text - all authors have focussed on the evidence base for their subject area and have highlighted areas where future work may be required to delineate the evidence base and develop clinical guidelines. The print edition is accompanied by a website containing additional material and clinical updates which will be helpful for both postgraduate students preparing for examinations and for practicing clinicians.

  • Fully comprehensive, encompassing the whole field of paediatrics - A one-stop resource for every trainee studying for the MRCPCH and every consultant needing a refresher for any aspect of paediatrics· All aspects of social and community paediatrics included in detail - paediatricians deal with a lot of community paediatrics these days; this book gives guidance on legal aspects, best practice, etc. by dedicated community experts
  • Has a comprehensive chapter on care of the neonate, which all paediatricians need to know as part of their training and hospital practice - do not have to purchase a separate book on neonatology when studying for exams
  • Key Facts boxes in each clinical chapter will highlight difficult areas of diagnosis or management - indicates problem areas for the clinician and gives guidance from the experts
  • Contains chapters on Paediatric Prescribing and Laboratory Reference Ranges, Biochemical / Physiologic Data in children - provides a one-stop reference for interpreting lab data and finding normal values in the paediatric patient, and scaling drug dosages to neonates and children
  • Chapter on International Child Health focuses on specific health issues affecting children from, or visiting, developing countries - with increasing numbers of refugees and more international travel, paediatricians need to be aware of the illnesses children might be exposed to and how to treat them
  • Dedicated chapter on practical procedures - assists the trainee in developing skills in complex techniques such as lumbar puncture, paracentesis and biopsy
  • Much stronger emphasis on Evidence-Based paediatrics, with each chapter referencing the key evidence-based articles and Cochrane reviews in their field of paediatrics
  • Each chapter will contact key fact boxes to highlight the key aspects of the clinical treatment of a condition, particularly where there is debate as to the best course of action
  • New chapters on terminal care and pain management, adolescent medicine, ambulatory paediatrics, evidence-based practice in paediatrics
  • More on child abuse and neglect to reflect the increased detection and awareness of abuse, with clear guidance from the experts on how to manage these cases
  • Companion website will be available, containing the full text of the book, frequent updates on key clinical subjects and much more
  • References will be streamlined and key review articles and Cochrane reviews will be given prominence
  • Several chapters have been merged and streamlined, and approx. 40% of the contributors are new
