This book reflects the growing maturity and sophistication in the implementation and application of Message Handling Systems (MHS) concepts and models, with reports of experimental implementations and proposals for new ways to exploit what has been developed. There is a shift of emphasis away from the design of foundation services towards their application. In order to provide a complete picture, these proceedings include an update and review of the MHS model with comparison of the 1984 and 1988 MHS recommendations, including a complete list of the service elements provided. This is followed by a survey of the current state of message systems interconnection, with various gateways spanning research groups in many countries. The reader can therefore discover where we are in terms of operational installed MHS networks, examine the standards to be employed for their continued extension, and then delve into the technical depths of the technology.
