Synopsis
The clash of prehistoric shamanic traditions with future technology makes for a gripping tale in this first novel by the Nebula Award-winning author.
On a moonlit night thirty thousand years ago, a young Neanderthal boy dreamed a true dream. In his dream, the spirit of the cave bear commanded the boy to follow her. Transported to a distant future beyond our own, he entered a strange world of brilliant and terrifying possibilities, a world inhabited by people who did not know the nature spirits or even understand the spirits of their own technology.
Guided only by memories, the young Neanderthal must recreate the shaman's path. He must reconcile the powerful and capricious spirit of the cave bear with the realities of life in the new world and find a way to save his people, the animals, and their sacred relationship.

About the Author
PAT MURPHY has won numerous awards for her science fiction and fantasy writing, including the Nebula Award, the Philip K. Dick Award, and the World Fantasy Award. She is the author of Nadya-The Wolf Chronicles, Wild Angel, Adventures in Time and Space with Max Merriwell, The City Not Long After and others. For more than twenty years, when she was not writing science fiction, she worked at the Exploratorium, San Francisco's museum of science, art, and human perception.

A young Neanderthal boy dreams that he is following the spirit of the she-bear, and he awakens in a future time. Having left his tribe behind, he remains faithful to the spiritual beliefs of his people and teaches himself the ways of a shaman. Paul Garcia's flat undertone for the boy, called Sam within his new world, reflects the character's quiet effort to maintain his equilibrium as he learns language and establishes deep bonds with some of those he meets. As Sam grows older and reconciles himself to the idea that he must remain in this new world, apart from his tribe, Garcia subtly shifts his speech to show his growing confidence.
