From Library Journal:
Anna Brodie, unacknowledged illegitimate daughter of a wealthy landowner, grows up in poverty, watching her mother die of untreated tuberculosis. She herself supports the family by training racehorses, for which she has both a gift and a passion. When she and her sister unexpectedly inherit their father's estate, she sets out to breed and run racehorsesan unacceptable ambition for a woman in England in the 1830s. The men close ranks against her because of her sex (and her success); corrupt and vicious men try to destroy her and her horses. But she is unstoppable and ruthless in pursuit of her dream. This novel combines the best elements of a historical romance, a feminist tract, and a Dick Francis racetrack thriller. Anna is not always likable, but she is unforgettable. Recommended. Marylaine Block, St. Ambrose Coll. Lib., Davenport, Ia.
