With one New York Times bestseller after another, Barbara Delinsky has made an indelible mark on readers with her novels of searing poignancy. Now comes one of her classic tales, an emotional and suspenseful story of a woman torn between the needs of her family and those of the man she loves...
COMMITMENTS
Sabrina Stone married wealthy and unwisely. And she's paying the price, wedded to a man who refuses to accept their handicapped son and denying her attraction to reporter Derek McGill, who interviews her for a story on parents of special children. Months later, in the midst of a divorce, Sabrina receives a shock: Derek has been unjustly convicted of murder. Impulsively she visits him in prison and what begins as an act of compassion soon turns into a dangerous and passionate test of courage. For as she tries to save him, Sabrina will discover the most important commitment of all, one that will determine the course of her life, the fate of her child, and the measure of her love.

BARBARA DELINSKY lives in Needham, Massachusetts. With thirty million copoies of her novels in print, in 25 different languages, Delinsky is one of the world's most beloved and revered storytellers.
Commitments was written during Delinsky's transition period as she moved from straight romance to the broader arena of women's fiction. As such, the story has a strong romance at its core but attempts to deal with other issues as well. Sabrina Stone's son was born severely brain damaged, for example. Investigative reporter Derek McGill was wrongly convicted of manslaughter and sent to prison in a plot masterminded by a very powerful enemy. The work cascades from human interest to self-discovery to romance cum mystery, passable plots all, but in the end it is too confusing and ultimately unsatisfying. Joyce Bean's narrative contribution makes the tale bearable; she moves easily among the characters and adds emotional depth and tension to the dialog, but she cannot overcome the novel's flaws. Only hardcore Delinsky fans will really enjoy this. Libraries are better off purchasing her more recently copyrighted works. Jodi L. Israel, MLS, Jamaica Plain, MA
