Synopsis

Former CBS News correspondent Goldberg cites example after example of what he identifies as distorted reporting and asserts that these examples prove the pervasiveness of a liberal bias in the mainstream media. His credibility is diminished by a breathless, scattershot approach and sketchy documentation of examples (many taken out of context); but his points seem to be that attuned citizens will find such examples everywhere they look and that honest journalists should open their eyes. He includes a section of contact information for conservative organizations and think tanks.

About the Author

BERNARD GOLDBERG was a CBS News correspondent for twenty-eight years and is the winner of seven Emmy Awards, six at CBS and one for his work at HBO's critically acclaimed Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. At CBS News, Goldberg covered stories all over America and much of the world for the CBS Evening News and 48 Hours. He also brought his unique perspective to the news in a special CBS Evening News segment, "Bernard Goldberg's America." Books that have left an impression me: almost anything Tom Wolfe has written, especially his early non-fiction; George Orwell and Shelby Steele; John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, Robert Wright's The Moral Animal. My favorite book as a kid was The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant by Douglass Wallop. About 5 or six years ago I re-read it to my then young daughter and loved it all over again. So did she.

Goldberg's book is aptly titled, as the journalist dishes out precisely what he indicts the liberal media for. An admittedly outspoken cynic and skeptic, never afraid of contention, Goldberg turns up example after example of leftist bias in the media. He finds compadres in Glassner (THE CULTURE OF FEAR) and Michael Moore-while lambasting these same as part of the problem. Vocally, Goldberg is blunt, loud, and insistent, clearly requiring careful engineering to keep him from overmodulating. While Goldberg makes his point with all the subtlety of a Times Square billboard, he adds an intelligent, combative voice to the media mix.
