On May 26,1967, the spiraling career of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, then the top contender for the world middleweight boxing crown, came to a shuddering and tragic halt: he and a young man were found guilty of the murder of three white people in a New Jersey bar. Originally published as an attempt by Carter to set the record straight and force a new trial, The 16th Round is a timeless, eye-opening portrait of growing up black in America, a scathing indictment of the prison system, and a mesmerizing re-creation of his furious battles in the ring and in the courtroom.

About the Author:
In 1974, Rubin "Hurricane" Carter's autobiography, THE 16th ROUND was published by Viking. Written from prison, Carter chronicled the twisted events that took him from world middleweight boxing contender to his life sentence as the accused murderer of three people in a New Jersey bar. Joan Baez, Muhammad Ali and Roberta Flack protested his innocence, and Bob Dylan wrote his classic anthem "Hurricane" about Carter's struggle. But it took the determined efforts of a group of Canadians, including Sam Chaiton and Terry Swinton to free Rubin Carter.
Review:
"A document of life lived in the center of hell." —Sports Illustrated

"When they come to list the greatest boxers, Hurrican's name isn't likely to pop up in the Top 10. But when they come to list the greatest figures of the 20th century, he'll be alone at the peak." —Boston Globe

"A shocking, savage and brilliant indictment of racial injustice and the inhumanity of the prison." —Globe and Mail

"Carter's scorching and poetic autobiography." —Toronto Sun
