Kindergarten-Grade 4 Bible stories in themselves are succinct and seldom need much con densation. This collection suffers badly from unnecessary pruning. For exam ple, Baby Moses has no sister Miriam to suggest the perfect nurse to Phar oah's daughter; Jacob does not disguise himself in an Esau-like hairy skin to trick his father. Selections include the usual tales from Genesis and Exodus, plus Samuel, some of David's life, Dan iel and the lions, Job, Jonah, Joshua and Jericho, Solomon, and the fiery fur nace. The imaginative illustrations, painted in warm-toned pastel shades and varied in size and shape, show short stocky figures with appealing broad, soulful faces in lively action. Some of the pictures are decoratively framed, and others sweep freely across double - page spreads. A well-spaced, readable typeface completes the attrac tive format. However, while some of the stories are done well and have a smooth narrative flow that reads aloud well, too much material is incomplete or incorrect to make the collection a useful source for learning about the Old Testament.
