PreSchool-Grade 1 Unlike Demi's clever alphabet game book (Find the Animals ABC Grosset, 1985), this book has cluttered, garishly bright illustrations that detract from the purpose of this number concept book. Double-page spreads contain plenty of stimulation, but young eyes (and older ones too) tend to whirl while trying to count the animals superimposed on a larger member of the same species. Perky, rhyming verses do take youngsters through the teen numbers, which many counting books do not. However, the complexity of picture and the effort to count the small enclosed animals will add little fun to the learning process for beginning counters. A much better selection for clarity of number concept and accompanying picture is Tana Hoban's Count and See (Macmillan, 1972). Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, Ohio

Counting from 1 to 20 is the main point of Demi's work, but there are other spreads on which readers can learn to count to 100 by fives or by twos. The book begins with a purple paisley rhino and quickly gallops past two floral elephants, three fuzzy ducklings, and four ferocious tigers. The colors in the pictures are almost psychedelic in intensity; children may find them brightly appealing or just plain garish. Some of the spreads work better than others; small animals are fitted into the bodies of larger animals, and the abstraction may prove confusing. A companion volume to Demi's Find the Animal ABC.
