Synopsis
All for a Shilling a Day The account of a famous regiment at war One of the many legacies of the Napoleonic age was the lancer. The Polish Lancers of the French Army made such an impression that at the end of the Napoleonic Wars lancer regiments became part of the British Army by converting Light Dragoon regiments. Many would go on to illustrious encounters at battles such as Balaclava and Omdurman. This book gives an account of one of these regiments, the 16th-at the time of the action described in these pages the only lancer regiment still to wear scarlet jackets-from the recruitment and training of the soldiers in the early 1840s. Far from Britain, the Empire was dominating the Indian Sub-Continent and was about to clash with the formidable kingdom of the Sikhs in the Punjab. It is the journey to this fateful conflict-the First Sikh War-to which Donald Featherstone devotes his narrative. We join the 16th on campaign with Paddy Gough's army on the banks of the Sutlej; there, under the brilliant generalship of Sir Harry Smith, they meet their destiny at the battle of Aliwal.

Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Paperback Edition. Three first paperback editions in a cardboard slipcase. This was probably issued in 1973 and contains MacDonald of the 42nd (May 1972), All for a Shilling a Day (August 1973) and Bowmen of England (October 1973). The latter two are given as New English Library Military History No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. The first book was originally published by Seeley in 1971 and the other two were originally published by Jarrolds in 1968 and 1967 respectively. All for a Shilling a Day has some reading creasing to the spine and all three books have slight rubbing at the top and bottom of the spine but the covers are otherwise crisp and unmarked. There is some light browning to the pages in each book and there is a four inch crease to the corner of one page in Bowmen of England and someone has written a small sum in pen on the inside of the back cover in that book but the pages are otherwise unmarked. The slipcase has a some slight edge wear only. All three books are first printings of the paperback editions. Seller Inventory # 020565
