Captain Robert Harry Arnott (1923-2015) was master of the Queen Elizabeth II, the largest and most luxurious passenger liner afloat. Captain “Bob” Arnott was nicknamed the “Jolly Green Giant” by his crew. Tall — 6ft 1in — he was the epitome of the bluff hearty sea dog. To his excellence as a seaman was added a comforting paternal presence that gave passengers confidence. Captain Bob first went to see at the age of 17 with the Blue Funnel Line. He was a humble midshipman then, but steady promotion followed. CAPTAIN OF THE QUEEN tells the story of his full career, culminating in that glorious moment when he was appointed Captain of the most famous passenger liner ever built. He was master of the QE2 from 1976-1985 but his long association with the ship dated back to 1967. This is a story told with a unique insight and affectionate recollection. The most famous names in the world, from all walks of life, have sailed on the QE2. People have been drawn back to its unique combination of elegance and comfort. Many of the stories told are taken from the Captain’s personal log, and the text is augmented with many illustrations from his own private collection. One of the favorite stories about him was his decision to take the Queen Elizabeth 2 out of Yalta harbour in 1980 when Russian KGB officials were being obstructive about visas — leaving guides and tour buses empty on the quayside — received full backing from the passengers who missed their tours but still sent him floral tributes and cheered him at dinner."
