C. J. Cherryh three-time winner of the coveted Hugo Award is one of today's best-selling and most critically acclaimed writers of science fiction and fantasy. The author of more than fifty novels, she makes her home in Spokane, Washington.
Another adventure set in the medium-future universe of Rimrunners and Cyteen; here, the action takes place in the solar system's asteroid belt, where independent miners are slowly being squeezed out by the predatory mining consortium ASTEX. Prospecting partners Morrie Bird, the old hand who owns the ship, and young, hotheaded pilot Ben Pollard encounter a wrecked, tumbling ship and discover aboard a lone survivor, Dekker, babbling and traumatized by whatever happened to him and by the loss of his partner. Hoping for salvage rights, Ben and Bird tow the hulk back to Base, and turn Dekker over to the medics. But, despite company denials, soon it emerges that at least part of Dekker's wild claims (an unreported collision, claim-jumping, a sinister plot) are true. Then, Dekker's partner's body turns up, bizarrely flung into a recovery orbit along with ores mined from a huge rock the company maintains doesn't exist. Teaming up with influential female miners Meg and Sal, Bird, Ben, and Dekker contrive to blow the lid off a massive coverup that involves ASTEX and public figures as distant as the President of Earth. Taut, gripping, realistic work, with Cherryh taking a stab at character development, and bringing her agreeably complex plot to a satisfying if unsurprising conclusion. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Cover Art: Uncredited (illustrator). 1992 Edition. © 1991: 1st in the 'Company Wars' series of books. 1st printing of 1992 edition:- Synopsis: Wildcatters in space, deep in the big empty. Bird and Ben. Looking for the once in a lifetime strike that would make them rich. Hearing the distress call from a sector where no ship should be. Not telling Mama because Mama don't allow - almost anything. Company rules. Not OK by them, but you obeyed because if you crossed the Company, you'd never work again. Maybe not even go on living. So when they found the survivor, babbling but disturbingly convincing in his story of a Company ship, off course, acting illegally, and responsible for the accident, Bird and Ben were already in over their heads:- Review(s): "Another tense, convincing C J Cherryh novel of innocence and skullduggery on the far frontiers of space. Gritty adventure, strong characterisation, and Machiavellian dealing aplenty. It's vintage Cherryh" - Locus / "Taut, gripping, realistic. Agreeably complex" - Kirkus Reviews / "One of the finest writers SF has to offer" - SF Chronicle:- (original cost £4.99). Seller Inventory # 11.001.00863
