From Library Journal

On the eve of the ceremony opening the Trans-Siberian gas pipeline, three important men are murdered in separate incidents along the Yamal Peninsula. Although the evidence points to three labor camp escapees as the murderers, the gruesome manner in which the bodies were mutilated suggests to the local Nenets population that ancient spirits are rising from the earth to avenge the Russians' persecution of the Nenets. CID investigator Anna Kovina must solve the murders as Russian forces move to quell what is fast becoming a full-scale revolt. Despite a distracting proliferation of minor characters, the mystery and its denouement are simple and satisfying. But the novel may be most fascinating for its depiction of a subject often overlooked by the Western media: the complex, fragile state of race relations in the Soviet Union.
