In the near future, two flights of Soviet fighters converge on oil-rich Saudi Arabia, and the U.S. scrambles to find a way that will stop the Russians without starting World War III. The Saudi king promises aid but tells his princes a different story, and the princes, in turn, have their own uses for military units under their controlwhen, that is, the fiercely independent Bedouins obey their orders. Meanwhile, the American president, a former history professor elected on a peace program, orders a massive military operation and agrees to overthrow the Saudi leaders. Fast-paced, rousing and clever in its impromptu solutions to tactical problems, this also relies heavily on stereotypes and somewhat kneejerk jingoism.

Condition: Used. Welcome to the curious world of "Good Friday" by Robert Lawrence Holt, a novel that dares to explore the enigmatic intersection of faith, existential dread, and the unique British penchant for queuing. Published in 1988 by Signet?because when you think ?soul-searching,? you naturally think ?paperback??this literary enigma is bound to tickle your intellect while simultaneously raising an eyebrow or two. It may be the only book where characters contemplate their life choices while waiting for a bus in the rain, a scenario so quintessentially British that it could be studied for its sociocultural implications. Now, one might wonder: why would anyone choose to read a book titled ?Good Friday?? One might also question why anyone would name a day after the crucifixion, but that?s a debate for another time. In this gripping narrative, Holt invites readers to accompany a motley crew of characters who have all decided that the best way to spend a somber holiday is by engaging in deep conversations about life?s meaning, or lack thereof, while clutching their umbrellas and dodging puddles. Is this a profound commentary on the human condition, or merely an excuse for British weather metaphors? You decide! But Holt doesn?t stop there. He crafts a tapestry of dialogue that echoes in your mind long after you?ve turned the final page?assuming you manage to turn any pages at all, given the condition of this second-hand tome. Expect delightful musings on topics ranging from the sacrificial nature of chocolate eggs to the psychological impact of a rainy day, creating a veritable buffet of thoughts that might leave you pondering your own relationship with confectionery and meteorology. The characters are as diverse as a box of assorted biscuits, each with their quirks and charms. You?ll meet the philosophical baker, the existential florist, and the retired vicar who has taken it upon himself to critique the local theatre productions. As they maneuver through the labyrinth of their own dilemmas, you may find yourself unwittingly reflecting on your own life choices?though hopefully with less awkwardness than trying to explain the meaning of ?Good Friday? to a confused tourist. Amidst the parade of rainy day musings and in-depth discussions about the mechanics of faith, Holt also slips in some biting humor. It?s the kind of book that reminds you that even the most serious subjects can be approached with a wink and a nod, preferably over a cup of lukewarm tea. You might even find yourself laughing aloud in public places?an act that will certainly elicit puzzled looks from others who are not privy to your inner dialogue on sacrificial pastries. Condition: This particular copy comes to you in a used state, which adds an air of authenticity and provides a tangible connection to the countless hands that have held it before yours. Expect well-loved pages with the occasional coffee ring and perhaps a mysterious piece of paper stuck between chapters that may or may not be an old shopping list. Consider it part of the charm?after all, every wrinkle and yellowed page tells a story of its own, much like the characters within Holt?s narrative. So, whether you?re a connoisseur of existential literature or simply someone looking for a quirky addition to your bookshelf, ?Good Friday? offers an experience as layered as a trifle, with all the delightful unpredictability of a British summer. It?s a book that promises to entertain, provoke thought, and perhaps even inspire you to find deeper meaning between the grooves of your own rainy afternoons. Remember, you can snag this delightful oddity and countless others at Crappy Old Books, where our motto is: ?Second-hand treasures, first-hand eccentricities!? Embrace the quirks of the past and add a dash of irony to your reading list today! Seller Inventory # 1800
