Reviews

When Lisbeth Barlow looks into a magic locket, she sees the face of her future husband. What Lisbeth cannot foresee is that, within 48 hours, she will be married, pregnant, and left to fend for herself as her husband Thomas goes off to war. In his absence, Lisbeth is shamefully treated by his family who deprive her of financial support and accuse her of unfaithfulness. When Thomas returns from France, he too refuses to acknowledge their child as his own. The characters in this grim novel are well developed, but not all are likable. While Lisbeth is portrayed as a strong woman, she seems passive in the face of Thomas's stubborn refusal to believe in her faithfulness. Nevertheless, with the added concerns of their son's life-threatening illness and a Frenchman bent on revenge, this story of a couple determined to salvage their marriage is compelling.
