After years of being virtually banished from his uncle's estate and forced to survive on his wits and winnings, Sir Gerard Montfort has learned that his uncle has died. Feeling liberated, he goes on a gambling binge and ends up in debt but is sure that as soon as he officially inherits, he can pay the moneylender off. Unfortunately, Gerard's uncle has always seen him as a wastrel, and so his will stipulates that although Gerard inherits the house and the property, the rest of his uncle's fortune goes to Annette Courtney, the village do-gooder and spinster. She is shocked, too, but quickly makes plans to help the villagers with her newfound wealth. Sir Gerard is determined to get the money back, but Annette, whose view of Gerard has been shaped by his uncle, sees no reason to cooperate. But she eventually discovers that Gerard is not the man his uncle thought he was, just as he finds out that Annette is not a typical spinster. Bergin's tale couldn't be more charming or satisfying.
