The director of a shelter housing battered women, Regan Keller is stunned when she becomes the prime suspect in a series of murders perpetrated by a serial killer who is systematically slaying abusers, all of whose victims have been residents of her shelter, and finds herself torn between two men--one her lover and a new worker at the shelter, the other, a police detective investigating the crimes. Justine Dare began writing romances for Silhouette in 1988. Since then she has published over twenty books and has won numerous Romantic Times and RWA awards. She worked in communications for a police department before turning to writing full time. She lives in San Clemente, California, with her husband. She loves to go sailing, rising, and driving around in her 1967 Corvette roadster—top down, naturally.
A serial killer is methodically slaughtering abusive men. All of the victims have girlfriends or wives in Rachel's House, a shelter for abused women, so naturally, the police believe that Regan Keller, the director, might be the murderer who's been dubbed "the Avenger." Wealthy Lillian Court, hearing that her beloved charity, Rachel's House, is the target of scandal, sends her son, Alex, to investigate by posing as the new handyman. Regan and Alex fall hard for each other, but he neglects to tell her who he really is. Still another layer of tension is added to the story as the reader wonders what will happen when she finds out the truth. Readers who crave the suspense of such serial killer books as last year's Unforgivable by Tina Wainscott and Monica Jackson's A Magical Moment (1999), also about a woman's shelter, will enjoy every spine-tingling scene. Dare, whose real name is Janice Davis Smith, also writes as Justine Davis, and is a four time RITA winner. Shelley Mosley
