Rudi MacKenzie has grown up knowing that he will one day assume leadership over the survivors of the technological disaster known as the Change. But a prophecy made at his birth spoke of an even greater destiny?a destiny that is about to be fulfilled. A mysterious traveler from Nantucket, long rumored to be the source of the Change, arrives on a mission to bring Rudi back with him. And between him and his destiny lies the the cult of a madman determined to stop him?

S. M. Stirling is the author of numerous novels, both on his own and in collaboration. A former lawyer and an amateur historian, he lives in the Southwest with his wife, Jan.
Todd McLaren comes to this narration with the cadre of characters he developed in narrating earlier books of the series. He's comfortable with the Scots accent of the Mackenzies and the regional accents of various other characters. For the feudal lords, he even adds a layer of condescension relating to their self-appointment to their positions of power. The first generation of children born after the Change--the day advanced technology became nonfunctioning--sets out on a trek across the mainland to Nantucket, led by Rudi Mackenzie. McLaren presents the narrative at a steady, even pace. He picks up the pace slightly in the many debates and philosophical discussions, and goes full force when the adventures and battles are at the fore. J.E.M. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
