Synopsis
Nearly a million Jews were consumed by the ovens of Treblinka before August 2, 1943. On that day 600 prisoners armed with stolen guns and grenades attacked the Nazi guards, burned the camp, and fled into the nearby Polish forests. Of these, 40 survived to bear witness to man's courage in the face of the greatest evil human history has produced.

About the Author
Jean-François Steiner is a writer and academic renowned for his nonfictional novel Treblinka: The Revolt of an Extermination Camp.
Simone de Beauvoir was born in Paris in 1908. In 1929 she became the youngest person ever to obtain the agrégation in philosophy at the Sorbonne, placing second on the exam to Jean-Paul Sartre. de Beauvoir taught at lycées in Marseille and Rouen from 1931 to 1937, and in Paris from 1938 to 1943. After World War II, she emerged as one of the leaders of the existentialist movement, working with Sartre on Les Temps modernes. The author of many acclaimed works, de Beauvoir was one of the most influential thinkers of her generation. She died in 1986.
Terrence Des Pres (1939–1987) was a writer and researcher best known for his works The Survivor: An Anatomy of Life in the Death Camps and Praises and Dispraises. He received degrees from Southeast Missouri State Collage and Washington University, and also taught at Colgate University.
