Marianne Neifert, M.D ("Dr. Mom"), is a pediatrician and lactation specialist, and the author of Dr. Mom, and Dr. Mom's parenting Guide. In addition to writing for Parenting and Baby Talk magazines and lecturing to health professionals nationwide, she is Consultant to the HealthONE Lactation Program at Columbia Rose Medical Center in Denver. She has over 20 years experience as a lactation specialist, has conducted breastfeeding research and published articles in the medical literature, serves on the Professional Advisory Board of of La Leche League International, and started one of the first breastfeeding referral centers in the United States. She lives in Denver, Colorado.
Popular author and columnist Neifert ( Dr. Mom: A Guide to Baby and Child Care , LJ 6/1/86) turns from pediatrics to parenting. She had her first baby while in college and went on to have four more children. After graduating from medical school she opened a full pediatric practice. In this guide, she covers family life with common sense and practicality. While maintaining that the employed mother is the norm, Neifert insists that families must be nurtured and uplifted. Strong families, she believes, build strong communities. Her work is insightful for its anecdotes drawn from life experience, and its recognition that the 1990s call for unique but not unattainable parenting skills. Recommended for parenting collections.
