Tom Grimm and Michele Grimm are freelance photographers and writers who have traveled throughout the United States and 135 other countries as a husband-and-wife team taking photos and gathering material for books, websites, magazines, newspapers, and corporate clients.
The Grimms' popular how-to photography books include their latest guide, THE BASIC BOOK OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY, and THE BASIC BOOK OF PHOTOGRAPHY, now in its 5th edition and a best-seller for more than 44 years. Both are published by Penguin/Plume. In addition, the couple has written and illustrated three other photography books, as well as three travel guides. Their photographs also have illustrated six childrens' books.
Michele and Tom maintain a stock photo library of more than 150,000 digital images and color transparencies taken on every continent during their global travels and assignments. Their photographic work is represented worldwide by the Alamy.com stock photo agency.
The Grimms are longtime members of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW), where Tom served as president in 1992-93. Their other professional memberships include the Authors Guild, the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA), and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
Tom studied at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, where he received a bachelor's degree in Journalism and a master's degree in Speech. Michele studied Art at Miami-Dade Junior College in Florida. In addition to traveling more than five years in motor homes on photographic odysseys throughout North America, the couple has lived in Bend, Oregon, the Florida Keys, and Laguna Beach and San Clemente in Southern California. Most recently they have settled on the Gulf Coast of Florida near Sarasota.
This substantial book, long a standard guide to photography, is so comprehensive that it serves as an excellent reference for both amateur and professional photographers. Written in a clear, conversational style, this work presents the myriad technical aspects of photographic equipment in an easily understood manner. Coverage begins with cameras and lenses, with emphasis on practical matters, such as how to load film and adjust lens openings. The authors then logically turn to film and discuss the selection of lenses and the use of flash equipment. In addition to equipment and materials, the two most important elements of good photography?lighting and composition?are considered. Although the emphasis is upon 35mm photography, other types of cameras, including point and shoot, Polaroid, and digital cameras, are also discussed in detail. The final chapter and appendixes offer an abundance of useful information, including recommended books, photography schools, workshops, competitions, and an extensive glossary of photographic terms. One would be hard-pressed to find a single volume that offers as much good, useful information about photography as this work. Highly recommended for all libraries.?Raymond Bial, Parkland Coll.
