Synopsis
Röda rummet utkom hösten 1879 och inleds med det bevingade voltaireska mottot om det obehagliga i att bli hängd i tysthet. Romanen uppmärksammades omedelbart för sin djärva, friska samtidssatir och blev August Strindbergs stora och hett åtrådda litterära framgång som med ens öppnade portarna till teatern och bokförlagen. Handlingen kretsar kring unga revoltörer i samhället och är till stor del baserad på Strindbergs egna upplevelser.
Röda rummet är i kraft av sitt friska levande språk, sin intellektuella rörlighet, sitt ungdomliga uppror och den än idag ej överträffade stockholmsskildring att räkna som den första moderna romanen i vår litteratur.
