PreSchool-Grade 2 Shadows, so often a source of fascination for children, are the focus of this story by the masterful Mahy. A natural for theme story programs, this charmer is certain to become a favorite with preschoolers and early readers alike. A little boy always takes the very best care of his shadow because it's the only one he'll ever have. Unfortunately, a witch takes notice of his painstaking care, and, offering him a spell as payment, asks him to mind her shadow while she goes on a vacation. A boy wouldn't dare refuse a witch, so two shadows it isone shaped like a boy and one all thorny like the witchand then the trouble begins. The bright paintings, rich with the feel of a lush countryside, emphasize the precise nature of the little boy and the mischievousness of the witch's shadow. Although some of the illustrations are too small to be effective with large groups, children will love poring over the detailed paintings and finding such humorous points as the vacationing witch's Mickey Mouse tee-shirt and the dog's obviously dirty looks for her shadow.
