Bennett (Univ. of Warwick) has selected a range of stories about marriage?some serious, some humorous, some ghostly?by authors who include Olive Schreiner, Willa Cather, and Edith Wharton. The stories, British and American, are charming and can be enjoyed for their own sake, as well as for their portrayal of women's lives of the late 19th century. This reviewer would have appreciated more depth in the discussion of the stories, their authors, and the marital situation of women in the 1890s. There is a glossary that defines such English words as dogcart, furze, and tatterdemalion, but it does not translate French phrases.
