Synopsis
The Ivory Gate by Mortimer Collins is a satirical Victorian novel that follows Paul Veryan, a brilliant but luckless writer who drifts between bohemian London and the English countryside. We are introduced to his circle: his fast-talking friend Tom Harington and a gallery of aristocratic and artistic figures, including Aurora Elmore, Agnes Brabazon, Lady Lucy Latimer, and the glamorous soprano Diana Dezii. Veryan's fortunes rise and fall as he pursues love, literary success, and a chance at influence in public life. He takes a post as secretary to the Thaumaturgical Commission under Lord Latimer, while navigating flirtations with Lady Lucy and awakening feelings for Aurora. The Azure Academy and Agnes Brabazon's flight from an unwanted match with a rich draper punctuate a portrait of manners, power, and ambition. The volume closes with mystery, romantic entanglements, and the sense that much of the world’s social machinery is a stage for witty drama.
