Synopsis
Controversial Letters by Henry Holbeach. Controversial Letters is a two-volume, epistolary work in which the author engages a sequence of letters to leading thinkers (e.g., John Stuart Mill, F. D. Maurice, Thomas Carlyle, J. H. Newman, G. H. Lewes, Alexander Bain, Matthew Arnold, Arthur Helps) to interrogate questions of ethics, religion, and public life. The letters argue for a moral philosophy grounded in truth, conscience, and liberty, and challenge both Benthamite utilitarianism and religious authority when they threaten individual freedom. Central themes include the division of social life into the Sphere of Law (compulsion and rights), the Sphere of Love (the Church and charitable obligation), and the limits of state power in regulating personal conscience.
