This nineteenth-century manual offers practical guidance for creating and managing Lyceums and debating societies, including step-by-step directions for forming clubs, drafting constitutions and bylaws, electing officers, and planning regular exercises such as lectures and debates. It provides sample prefaces, notices to ladies, and notes on mineral collections, science education, and moral improvement, reflecting its broad aim of promoting useful knowledge and virtuous citizenship. The work also features discusses sections on controversial topics of the era (capital punishment, fictitious writings, animal magnetism) and a rich array of essays and outlines designed to train youth in rhetoric, logic, and public speaking. An extensive Appendix includes an epitome of rhetoric, an epitome of logic, and rules for fair controversy, preceded by references and suggested subjects for study. The 1841 text was published in New York by A. E. Wright.
