Our Liberties Defended: The Question Discussed, Is The Protestant Or Papal System Most Favorable To Civil And Religious Liberty? by Samuel Finley Breese Morse. This 1841 pamphlet presents a polemical debate drawn from the Journal of Commerce in which Morse, writing as a Protestant advocate, argues that Protestant liberty is superior to Papal authority. The work arises from public controversy over a Papal bull and Catholic debating societies, and frames the issue as a contest between two systems—the Protestant tradition of civil and religious liberties and the Papal system that, in Morse’s view, seeks to merge church and state and restrict open discussion. The text interleaves prefatory remarks, editorials, and a sequence of provocatively titled letters from mock ‘debate participants’ such as Obsta Principiis and Catholicus. Morse contends that genuine liberty requires freedom of speech, press, and conscience, and he cites Magna Carta as historical precedent while warning against foreign interference in American institutions. The volume thus functions as a historical specimen of antebellum religious-political polemic.
