Synopsis
"De L'intelligence" by Henri Taine. In this foundational work Taine develops a general psychology by analyzing the signs that underlie knowledge, the images that repeat sensations, and the role of general terms as substitutes for impossible experiences. The book outlines four parts: Part I, The Elements of Knowledge (Signs); Part II, The Images; Part III, The Sensations; Part IV, The Physical Conditions of Moral Events. Taine argues that knowledge begins as signs—experiential cues that stand for absent objects; images are resurrected sensations that accompany thought; and general terms arise from successive substitutions that fuse many particular experiences into abstract ideas. He then details the psychology of memory, anticipation, and reasoning, showing how the brain’s cortical and subcortical structures sustain, revive, and reorganize sensory material into sentences, judgments, and laws. The work links philosophical inquiry with physiologic observation, offering a rigorous, systematic theory of perception, thought, and the emergence of science, while acknowledging the limits of contemporary knowledge.
