Synopsis

The Life Of Joseph Addison Alexander by Henry Carrington Alexander presents a comprehensive biography of Addison Alexander, tracing his youth, linguistic genius, conversion, and early ministry within the American evangelical-intellectual milieu. Drawing on diary excerpts, letters, and reminiscences, the work maps a prodigious linguist whose studies encompassed Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Arabic, Persian, Syriac, and Chaldee, and how these pursuits intersected with his devotional life and vocational calling. The narrative follows Addison’s formation within Princeton and Edge Hill circles, his family influences (notably Archibald Alexander and James Alexander), and his mentors and collaborators as he engages with Biblical Repertory and broader biblical and Oriental scholarship. A central theme is the shifting balance between Oriental and Hellenistic/New Testament interests, and how personal letters, observations, and classroom practice shaped his scholarly trajectory. The book further traces his European travels (Halle, Berlin, Bonn, Gottingen, Paris) and his return to Princeton as a rising professor and influential preacher, illustrating how his prodigious intellect, disciplined teaching, and devout piety helped remake American biblical and philological studies.
