A System Of Logic, Ratiocinative And Inductive: Being A Connected View Of The Principles Of Evidence, And Methods Of Scientific Investigation by John Stuart Mill. This foundational treatise presents logic as the science and art of pursuing and testing truth through evidence, and outlines a program to organize the best ideas on evidence, investigation, and the relation of logic to science. The work begins with a Preface clarifying that it offers an organized synthesis rather than a revolution, and an Introduction that defines logic as the science of proof and the operations of thought in the pursuit of truth. In Book I (Names and Propositions) Mill analyzes language, names, connotation and denotation, and the fundamentum relationis; he offers a fourfold classification of nameable things: Feelings, Minds, Bodies, and the relations among them. He then develops an inductive–deductive framework, discusses the copula and proposition types, and surveys four primary experimental methods—Agreement, Difference, Residues, Concomitant Variations—with extensions such as the Joint Method. The aim is a deductive, verifiable science of natural laws.
