Synopsis
Lascine by William Ernest Youngman. Set in late 19th-century England and continental Catholic circles, Lascine centers on Edward Lascine, a refined young man from Treven Manor who joins the Catholic Church and leaves Oxford life and family fortune to study at Catholic colleges such as St. Osmund’s. The novel follows his trials as he endures estrangement from his mother and from his aristocratic peers while pursuing a vocation. Through a sequence of conversions, ordinations, and assignments—from the sacristy of St. Osmund’s to cathedrals in Oxford, Paris, Florence, and Rome—Edward meets friendship, temptation, and steadfast faith. The narrative traces his personal sacrifices, including a dramatic engagement to a worldly marrying scheme that never grants him peace, and ends with his ultimate commitment to the religious life amid bereavement and the call to serve.
