Anselmo: A Poem by George R. Parburt. This long Romantic epic, written in 19th?century verse, traces the life, loves, and fates of Anselmo from his Potomac homeland to distant shores. Framed by a minstrel narrator, the poem unfolds across five cantos as Anselmo and a succession of beloved women—Isabel, Julia, Leila, and Rosabel—navigate youthful passion, moral trials, and political intrigue in settings ranging from classical academies to Panama and the Caribbean. Across lush descriptions of ocean, river, and tropical gardens, the verse interrogates art and science, faith and desire, honor and betrayal, using classical allusions and grand melodrama. Central motifs include the healing and hazards of love, the conflict between ideal beauty and worldly power, and the inexorable passage of time. The drama culminates in tragedy and, at last, a renewed vow as Anselmo and Isabel are united in marriage, celebrated in a solemn temple scene.
