On The Principles Of Common, Or Inceptive Discipline, The Eighth Of A Series Of Letters To A Brother Curate. By A Superanumerary J. Pring is a nineteenth century religious treatise written in the form of letters to a fellow curate. It argues that the starting point of Christian life and church reform is a broad, common discipline, which the author terms the inceptive or common sphere. Using biblical citations and military imagery, he likens Christian life to an army with enlistment, discipline, tactics, and command, and contends that baptism is the entrance into this discipline. The work then surveys education and schooling, proposing a twofold system of instruction for the young — rote learners (rotists) and those who learn by understanding (sentients) — and a program for widespread schooling governed by church and state considerations. Throughout, it critiques mere formality and emphasizes sincerity, humility, charity, and unity across Christian denominations. The text also discusses gender in baptism, the role of women, the relation of church and civil authority, and a vision of a disciplined, virtuous society rooted in Christian principles.
