It then treats Athens' topography—the Acropolis, Pnyx, Areiopagus, and surrounding plains—its rivers Cephisus and Ilissus, and the Attic quarries of Pentelicus and Hymettus. Subsequent chapters explain the history of Athens in relation to its public edifices, the plan and proportions of Grecian temples, Phidias and his contemporaries, the Parthenon’s metopes, frieze, and pediments, and the Panathenaic procession, combining antiquarian detail with architectural and mythic interpretation.
