Synopsis

The Rayner-Slade Amalgamation by Joseph Smith Fletcher. A sprawling British mystery of crime, jewels, and betrayal unfolds as Marshall Allerdyke, a wealthly Bradford manufacturer, travels from Hull to London and Edinburgh after his cousin James Allerdyke dies under suspicious circumstances. A doctor’s calm verdict of heart failure is challenged by a sequence of clues: notes, diaries, and a missing jewel cache, including a gleaming diamond shoe-buckle found in James’s room. The plot thickens as Celia Lennard (the Hull passenger who later appears as Zélie de Longarde in Edinburgh) and her éminent circle, including her maid Lisette, a sharp American intermediary Franklin Fullaway, and Merrifield, the secretary to a Chicago magnate, become embroiled with an international jewel conspiracy connected to the Princess Nastirsevitch. Across Hull, London, and Edinburgh, murders, poisonings, and clever deceptions propel the chase. In the end, conspirators are unmasked, jewels recovered, and Allerdyke secures a lawful but romantic triumph by proposing to Lennard.
