Roman Catholic Principles Incompatible With Civil Power In A Protestant State, A Speech by Thomas Cotterill. This work presents a political and religious polemic delivered in Wakefield on April 21, 1819. The author, a Church of England clergyman, argues that granting Catholic emancipation and broader civil rights to Catholics would threaten the British constitutional order by introducing a religiously based political power. The text reviews Catholic doctrines—such as papal supremacy, the infallibility of councils, and the oaths required of priests and bishops—and contends that these tenets create a divided allegiance incompatible with loyalty to the Protestant state. An Appendix gathers Catholic testimonies and anti-Catholic counterpoints to illustrate the perceived dangers and to support the call for maintaining restrictions on Catholic participation in civil life. With a firm stance in favor of the Protestant establishment, Cotterill advocates vigilance in Parliament against concessions that could destabilize church–state relations.
