Synopsis

The narrative centers on Miss Langley, a fabulously wealthy matron; Lady Emma Donnington, the Marquess's ward; and Lord Henry Beauchamp, who courts both fortune and love. Emma’s romance with Henry is undermined by former lovers and by Miss Langley’s influence; Catherine Mansfield, the governess, mediates loyalties and protects Emma’s interest while loyalties shift. After dramatic turns—a clandestine engagement, devious matchmaking, a fatal illness, and Henry’s death—the Beechwood estate eventually passes to Langley Falconbridge, with debts settled and the faltering fortunes restored through family affections and benevolence.
