Synopsis
The Enthusiasts by Robert Plumer Ward. The novel is an epistolary narrative that probes the nature and consequences of Enthusiasm—religious, political, and philosophical—through a sequence of letters, dialogues, and a developing plot about a German circle of reformers, the Sand Association, and the dangerous collision of idealism with power. The letters, addressed across the German and Bohemian environs, follow Rheindorf, Herzstein, Winter, and Becker as they discuss liberty, equality, aristocracy, and revolution. Ward juxtaposes the glamour and hollowness of court life with the simplicity of rural virtue in a Bohemian castle, and shows how zeal can degenerate into tyranny, murder, and social destruction.
