The Religion Of The Northmen by Rudolph Keyser. The present work is a scholarly treatise on the old Northmen’s Asa-Faith, its dogmas, interpretation, and life in heathen times, translated by Barclay Pennock. It offers a comprehensive account of how the Norse gods and cosmic world were imagined, how ritual and worship were organized, and how myth and cult interacted with daily life before and during the early Christian era. The book is structured in three parts: first, the dogmas of the Asa-faith; second, the interpretation of the Asa-doctrines (including creation, Yggdrasill, worlds, gods, and eschatology); and third, the influence of Asa-faith on the popular life and customs of the Northmen (ministers of religion, temples, sacred rites, oaths, duels, sorcery, divination, and national spirit). It also surveys the restoration of Icelandic literature, the Older and Younger Eddas, the Sagas, and the discovery of America by the Northmen. It closes with a discussion of the decline of Asa-faith and its lasting significance for scholarship. The translator’s preface clarifies the sources and aims of presenting the Norse religious world on its own terms, with careful attention to philology and historical context.
