Synopsis

A Prodigal Son by Dutton Cook. A Victorian family drama about guilt, inheritance, and reconciliation. When Wilford Hadfield returns to Grilling Abbots after seven years away, his father, the stern landowner, confronts him with a test of penitence drawn from the Prodigal Son parable. The dying man tears up a will that would have restored Wilford to the estate and disinherits him, sending him away with barbed accusations. Wilford pleads for forgiveness, but the old man dies, making Stephen the heir and setting off a long shadow over the family. Wilford falls ill and is cared for at the doctor’s cottage, where he meets Violet Fuller, the doctor's daughter, and a quiet romance begins with Madge as confidante. The volume ends with a planned year-long engagement and Wilford’s resolve to win a new life with Violet, while social expectations and family loyalties press on them.
