Notice Of Runic Inscriptions Discovered During Recent Excavations In The Orkneys by James Farrer documents Farrer's 1861–1862 excavation around the Maes-Howe mound and related features near Stennes in Orkney. The privately circulated study presents a detailed account of the discovery, architectural description, and interior of Maes-Howe, including a central chamber and side cells sealed by large flagstones, and a wealth of runic inscriptions on the walls. It records the excavation process, measurements, and the reconstruction of the plan, with plates and appendices illustrating the Great Circle of Stennes, barrows at Bookan and Tenstone, and the central passage. The work also includes readings of many inscriptions by scholars Stephens, Munch, and Rafn, offering interpretations ranging from Viking voyages and Crusades to burial and treasure legends.
