Synopsis

The Leeds Guide, Including A Sketch Of The Environs And Kirkstall Abbeyoffers a comprehensive early 19th-century panorama of Leeds, its institutions, and its surrounding countryside. The work assembles historical notes, topographical surveys, and practical information about churches, charitable institutions, public buildings, markets, and manufactures, weaving together antiquarian lore with contemporary urban description. The book describes Leeds as a thriving commercial town in a populous manufacturing district, details its governance, court system, and policing, and surveys its streets, squares, and suburban villages. It devotes substantial sections to the town’s religious establishments—parish churches, chapels of dissenters, Quaker meeting, Roman Catholic and other denominations—plus weekly lectures and charitable institutions such as the General Infirmary, House of Recovery, schools, alms houses, and the workhouse. A major feature is the detailed treatment of Kirkstall Abbey, including its monastic origins, the succession of abbots, the abbey’s ruins, and antiquities, with lines by the poet Cornelius Cayley. The guide blends travelogue, history, and civic record, reflecting Enlightenment-era interests in public knowledge and municipal pride.
